From July 7 to 10, 2005, the town of Saint-Jérôme hosted the Special Olympics Provincial Summer Games. More than 600 athletes with an intellectual disability and 200 coaches from Québec's 16 regions, in addition to 300 volunteers and 750 family members and supporters, got together for the occasion.
During the 2005 Saint-Jérôme Law Enforcement Torch Run benefiting Special Olympics Québec, 40 runners and patrol cars of the Canadian Border Services Agency, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, the CN Police, the Régie intermunicipale de police Thérèse-de-Blainville, the Sûreté du Québec as well as the Montreal, Saint-Jérôme, Longueuil, Mirabel and Sherbrooke police departments carried the Flame of Hope from Montreal to St-Jérôme.
Provincial Games ended on a high note with the release of doves. Athletes and coaches left the village and boarded buses with their heads filled with unforgettable memories, smiles on their faces and pride in their hearts. Congratulations go to the organizing committee presided by Lorraine Larocque and to Honorary Co-Chairs Lucie Papineau and Jean-Pierre Contant. Kudos goes to the volunteers and chefs de mission who put their hearts into every task.
